What are the Causes of Nephrotic Syndrome?

NS can be caused by diseases that damage the kidneys. Some of these diseases affect the kidneys, and these are called primary causes of NS. Other diseases affect the whole body, including the kidneys, and these are called secondary causes of NS. Most people who have NS have secondary causes.
The most common primary cause of NS in adults is a disease called focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). FSGS causes scars on the kidneys’ tiny filters called glomeruli. The most common secondary cause of NS in adults is diabetes.
The most common primary cause of NS in children is minimal change disease. Minimal change disease causes kidney damage that can only be seen using a very powerful microscope. The most common secondary cause of NS in children is diabetes.
The following conditions may cause specific damage to the glomeruli and often result in the development of heavy protein in the urine and in many instances NS:
Amyloidosis, congenital nephrosis, FSGS, Glomerulonephritis, IgA Nephropathy (Berger's disease), minimal change disease, pre-eclampsia, etc.
